Should you convert BMP to JPG?
Old scanners, Paint and legacy software produce huge BMP files. JPG shrinks them to a fraction of the size so you can email or upload them.
Do this for photographs, where JPG saves a lot of space for a difference that’s hard to see. Keep the BMP if the picture is a screenshot, a diagram or anything with text and hard edges, which JPG smudges.
JPG is also the more widely supported of the two: it opens everywhere, while BMP is opens almost everywhere.
BMP is an uncompressed grid of pixels; JPG is a lossy photo format that trades detail you can’t see for much smaller files. Use JPG for photographs you are sending, uploading or printing, especially when a form or app is fussy about formats.

What changes when BMP becomes JPG
BMP keeps everything, JPG does not
BMP stores the picture exactly. JPG throws away detail to save space, and the quality setting decides how much. At the default of 90 almost nobody can tell on a photograph; on text, lines and flat color the loss shows sooner, as soft halos around edges.
Expect a much smaller file
BMP: A 12-megapixel image is about 36 MB. JPG: A 12-megapixel phone photo is usually 2–5 MB. Shrinking the file is often the main reason to make this conversion.
This page is put together from our notes on each format, choosing only what is true of BMP and JPG, so every pairing states the same facts the same way. How these pages are made.
Why it doesn’t upload
Changing a picture’s format is work your browser already knows how to do. Sending your photos to a server first only adds waiting and risk, so nothing is sent.
How to check for yourselfWorth knowing
- About the BMP. BMP looks like a safe “raw” choice, but a single photo can run to tens of megabytes and most sites refuse it.
- About the JPG. Re-saving a JPG again and again degrades it, because each save compresses the already compressed version. Keep an original and export to JPG once, at the end.
- DDS, PSD, EXR, XWD and JPEG 2000 are read by the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download.
